Globe Valve components and working

Globe Valve Component;  Globe Valve is used to control the flow rate. By turning the flow direction of the fluid perpendicular to the fluctuations of the Disc and Stem by Globe valve components as follows: Globe Valve Working;  Globe valve controls the flow rate by turning the fluid direction upright and perpendicularly, allowing for easy opening and closing. Therefore, it can be used for systems with very high-pressure differences, but due to the change in the flow direction, the pressure drop across the Globe valve is increased accordingly. Barlow formula – Pipe thickness calculation

Barlow’s Formula;  Barlow’s Formula is the relationship between Internal Pressure and working pipelines. Depending on the size and strength of the material, Barlow’s Formula is the basic formula used to calculate the thickness of the straight pipe and Cylindrical pressure vessel shell in  ASME Code. What is “S” Allowable stress: See SMTS and Allowable Stress Continue reading Barlow formula – Pipe thickness calculation

Gate valve testing and maintenance

1- Purpose of using Gate Valve on stream Gate Valve is used to open and close the flow only. Not commonly used in flow control with the following components. 2- Operation (open-closed) of Gate Valve 3- The Hydrostatic Test for Gate Valve requires 3 parts, Shell, Seat, and Backseat  The hydro-testing according to API 598. The valve standard is ASME B16.34 ***Gate Valve – Hydrotest Backseat;  The Hydrostatic Backseat Test must be tested at a pressure of not less than 1.1 times the Maximum Operating Pressure by fully opening the valve and releasing the gland of the gate valve to check for leaks through the Backseat. ***Gate Valve – Hydrotest Shell;  Hydrostatic Shell Test must be tested at a pressure … Continue reading Gate valve testing and maintenance

What is Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA)?

What is an ECA? Most welding fabrication codes specify maximum tolerable flaw sizes and minimum tolerable Charpy energy, based on good workmanship, i.e. what can reasonably be expected within normal working practices. These requirements tend to be somewhat arbitrary, and failure to achieve them does not necessarily mean that the structure is at risk of failure. An Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA) is an analysis, based on fracture mechanics principles, of whether or not a given flaw is safe from brittle fracture, fatigue, creep or plastic collapse under specified loading conditions. An ECA can, therefore, be used: During design, to assist … Continue reading What is Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA)?

Make temporary flange for Hydro-test or Blind as ASTM A 694.

A specification for steel forgings such as ASTM A694 covers a wide range of strength grades from F42, with a minimum specified yield strength of 290 MPa, to F70, with a minimum specified yield strength of 485 MPa. The compositional limits are given in ASTM A694 (product analysis) are ≤0.3% carbon 0.13-0.37% silicon and ≤1.50% manganese. Additionally, the steel may contain micro-alloying elements, i.e. it may be a micro-alloyed (or high strength low alloy) steel; alternatively, Cr-Ni-Mo-V low alloy steel, ASTM A707 Grade L5, may be used. Particularly for small valves and thin section sizes, it may be expected that … Continue reading Make temporary flange for Hydro-test or Blind as ASTM A 694.

What is Piping Leak test

LEAK TEST Prior to initial operation, and after completion of the applicable examinations required by para. 341, each piping system shall be tested to ensure tightness. General Requirements for Leak Tests Requirements in para. 345.2 applies to more than one type of leak test. Preparation for Leak Test: 345.3  will be followed as below guide chart: How many Types of LEAK TEST? + Para 345.4 Hydrostatic Leak Test + Para 345.5 Pneumatic Leak Test + Para 345.6 Hydrostatic-Pneumatic Leak Test + Para 345.7 Initial Service Leak Test + Para 345.8 Sensitive Leak Test + Para 345.9 Alternative Leak Test Record: + Para 346 RECORDS Document refer ASME B31.3 – 2019 Continue reading What is Piping Leak test

DIA-INCH & INCH-METRE IN PIPING

In O&G EPCI projects, both Dia-Inch & Inch-Meter are generally considered as units for measurement of the piping job loads (mainly for Welding/ Installation/ Hydro Test measurements). The former being denoted by the DI of (phi) ” or ” and Inch-metre by IM respectively; can be understood as below: Consider a 10″ NB pipe of length says 30 metres. If there are 5 joints of this pipe to be welded, the quantum of this welding job is calculated as: DI = *Pipe Dia (in inches ~ 10) x No. of joints (~5) = 50  Dia-Inch  *Notes: The joint included of Flanges, … Continue reading DIA-INCH & INCH-METRE IN PIPING

Weld Carbon steel to Stainless steel

It is not uncommon to find fabricating shops that are welding a variety of metals including carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and nickel alloys.  In many cases, some of these materials need to be welded to other types.  Once a very common situation, especially in shipbuilding, oil & gas projects in welding carbon steel to stainless. One of the most frequent questions we receive about this is what filler metal to use.  Welding dissimilar metals can be tricky, especially when you get into the exotic alloys.  Always consult with the manufacturer of the base material or seek the expert advice … Continue reading Weld Carbon steel to Stainless steel

Standard discharge connections for Piping ( shore connection flange )

We will summary the standard discharge connection for some piping system on ship, also called by Shore connection flange. The international shore connection is a universal hose connection that is to be provided on all ships as per the IMO SOLAS requirement. The purpose of the International Shore Coupling is to keep a standby hose attachment to get a connection from shore or from other ships for shipboard firefighting, in case there is a total failure of pumps onboard. The information is taken from MARPOL 73/78 1) Sewage system: For example: 2) Fireman system: The international shore coupling SOLAS requirement under Chapter II-2, regulation … Continue reading Standard discharge connections for Piping ( shore connection flange )
